The onset of labour is usually an anxious yet exciting time for soon to be mums as they look forward to having their babies. However, when the EDD (Expected Delivery Date) passes by without any signs of labour, some women begin to consider natural ways to bring it on. Having sex is said to be the leading method pregnant women try out to induce labour.
Ways in which sex can induce labour
Although it has not been scientifically proven, here are some theoretical ways in which sex encourages labour to begin.
- During sex, oxytocin hormone is released in the body of the pregnant woman which may trigger the beginning of labour. The hormone helps with contractions which are important in the build-up of labour and eventual delivery.
- Engaging in sex can also result in an orgasm that can help in the stimulation of the uterus, resulting in labour. Many mums that have had labour begin after sex often attributes it to having orgasms during the act.
- The introduction of semen which has chemicals known as prostaglandins helps relax the tissues around the cervix making it ready for delivery. It is also said that semen helps in the ripening and softening of the cervix area as well.
Overall, engaging in sex in the last trimester is not an easy task as you will have to be creative in finding positions that are safe and comfortable for both of you.
