Hi Baby Banda, I think my son is allergic to proteins he has small rashes on his face since I started giving him foods that has proteins. I started him on solids when he was 5 months now he is 6 and a half, when I took him to the clinic I was told I can now give him the food we eat plus I should give him more proteins because what I was giving him was mostly starch, so far I’ve given him soya porridge the one for famila plus, I’ve also given him fish. Should I continue giving him proteins because the allergy is not that serious?

Yes at this time your baby should be eating a balanced diet made up of fats (you should fry his food with oil or butter), starches, proteins and fruits and vegetables. However, infants who are being introduced to proteins don’t do very well with plant proteins e.g. the soya porridge. Soya is a highly allergenic food and most babies tend to have adverse reaction to it. It is not a suitable food for infants. Instead, offer fish, chicken, chicken liver, and egg whites. Aim to introduce plant proteins after 9 months. For porridge, use single grain cereals like maize, wimbi (millet), sorghum (mtama) or oat porridge.
