Hi Baby Banda, I have been breastfeeding my baby exclusively for 5 months now. I have noticed she has a keen interest in whatever I’m eating and chews on whatever she gets hold of (including her fist). Does this mean she is hungry and I can start to wean her?

As babies near the 6 months mark they start to show keen interest in your food. This does not mean that she is quite ready yet, but just indicates that her brain has developed a sense of what food is. The few weeks remaining still make a difference. Food (solids) contains complex a form of nutrients and your baby is ready to digest these complex carbohydrates, protein and fats by 6 months of age. Enzymes to digest complex nutrients are fully activated after 6 months so please do wait.
