Kenya is rich in different cultures and each of these communities will usually have their own special blend of foods that are touted as being fertility boosters. Here are a few foods that may help you and your partner improve your chances for conception.
1. Tomatoes
These are plentiful in Kenya and are packed full of a nutrient called lycopene. Studies show that lycopene has been found to boost sperm count by up to 70 per cent and increase swimming speed. Go ahead, bring out the Kachumbari and cook with this available vegetable.
2. Bananas
This is one of the most affordable and available fruit all around Kenya. Banana is packed with vitamin B6, which regulates the hormones and is needed for good egg and sperm development.
3. Eggs
The amazing egg is rich in protein and Vitamin D. This nutrient is thought to increase fertility in women. Eggs also are rich in vitamin B12, omega-3 fats and folate which will help minimize the possibility of birth defects.
4. Peas
Peas are rich in Zinc. This mineral has been shown to boost sperm levels and quality of the male sperm. For women, it helps balance out the oestrogen and progesterone hormones that are important in female fertility
5. Avocado
Most Kenyans like to add this fruit as an accompaniment to foods e.g. Rice, Githeri etc. Avocado is a great source of vitamin E which is essential for fertility. It is also a great source of unsaturated fats which are essential for healthy hormone functioning.
6. Yams
Some fertility research has indicated that yams contain an ovulation stimulating substance and are rich in the fertility-friendly vitamins. Have a nice meal of this delicious root.
7. Black Beans
Black beans are very popular in some of our local communities in Kenya. These beans are rich in phytoestrogen. This nutrient helps the estrogen to rise aiding to support the development and maturation of healthy eggs.
