Research shows that there is a reduction in sexual activity, vaginal intercourse and sexual desire in many women as the pregnancy progresses. Both the woman and her partner have concerns regarding complications in the pregnancy that might occur as a result of sexual intercourse. Majority of women would wish to discuss these issues with their doctor but are not always comfortable raising the topic themselves. Some of the factors that influence sex during pregnancy include:
* Cultural, social and religious beliefs. In some communities in Kenya, pregnant women are not allowed to maintain contact with their partners, especially after the 2nd trimester when she starts showing.
* The physical and psychological changes of pregnancy
* Anxieties and fears of complications in pregnancy
* Ignorance and old wives tales
* Medical advice
