I have a 1 day old baby. He is suckling but no milk yet. So what do I do? I want to breastfeed him exclusive. Am based in Kisumu. Where can I get nipple cream and which one should I buy?
Firstly, congratulations on the birth of your little one. We are glad that you have chosen to breastfeed your baby. Initially after birth, it takes a little while for milk to ‘come in’, however, the baby still gets some liquid (colostrum) which is usually clear. To stimulate the milk to come, continue to suckle your baby often, ensure that you are latching on correctly by putting the whole areola (black part) in the mouth; this will prevent your nipples from becoming sore and also stimulates the milk to come in. Take lots of clear liquids and there are some teas and seeds that are good for stimulating milk e.g. Moringa Tea, Hibiscus Tea, Dill Seeds, Fennel Seeds, Fenugreek Seeds. For the nipple cream, any baby shop usually stocks and Avent Nipple cream is usually available. You can also use Lanolin Cream but once your milk comes in, you can press a little, apply over the nipple and areola area and let it air dry. It works even better than the creams.
