A newborn should add an average of around 700g to around 1 kg every month, so that they are on the green line on the weight chart found on the clinic card. To help a breastfeeding baby add weight, you can do the following
    1. Ensure that your baby gets the hind milk when breastfeeding, when a baby starts breastfeeding on a full breast , the first 5 or so minutes is water and sugar, as the baby continues feeding towards 15-20 minutes they get to the rich milk that has fats, proteins, carbohydrates that will help them add weight. Strive to feed your baby on one breast per feed for around 20-25 minutes before changing to the other.
    2. Express milk for around 20 minutes to ensure that you get hind milk and then give a supplementary feed of the expressed milk; this helps your baby get a bit more into their system. Avoid bottles at this stage but rather use a cup and spoon to prevent nipple confusion
    3. Keep a strict routine of feeding the baby every 3 hours even at night until her weight picks up.
If the weight continues to be slow after 1 month, I would advise that you ask your doctor to run test e.g. thyroid tests to rule out other medical causes.
