The confirmation of pregnancy is usually the beginning of bonding between a mother and her baby. Most women in Kenya start preparing for their baby and learning as much as they can on the best way to have a safe pregnancy. Among the important topics for expectant mothers is early recognition of symptoms that may put the pregnancy at risk. These risks vary from the beginning to the end of pregnancy, but some are commonly experienced in the first trimester.
Excessive nausea
Many women experience nausea in the first months of pregnancy but this usually goes away over time. Most times, nausea is accompanied by vomiting that can at times be extreme resulting in dehydration, weight loss and even dizziness. These complications can put a mother and her growing baby at risk requiring you to urgently seek medical help.
Severe abdominal pain
Typically, pain in the abdomen when pregnant should be a cause of concern especially when accompanied by cramping. If the pain continues and is severe it might mean that you are having a miscarriage especially if the pregnancy is less than twelve weeks. Early miscarriages occur due to a number of reasons thereby making it important for expectant women to get checked as soon as they experience abnormal pain the abdomen.
Vaginal bleeding
Light bleeding in early pregnancy is normal as the embryo attaches itself in the uterus signalling the beginning of the nine-month-long journey. However, if the bleeding becomes heavier, continuous and is accompanied by pain at the side or lower abdomen, you are likely going through a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
