How to Ease the Transition to the Toddler Bed

193

As the New Year approaches, one of your new year’s resolutions is to finally get your toddler to sleep in her own bed. This can be quite a daunting transition both for you and your baby. Here are a few tips to help ease this transition.

  • Have your toddler get used to sleeping in his/her crib during naptime.
  • Have some time to explain the many benefits of sleeping in his/her own bed or room.
  • Involve him in the process of decorating his/her bed with their new bedding or decorating the walls with their favourite cartoons, etc.
  • If at first your toddler resists sleeping in his/her own room, try getting him out of your bed by placing a mattress on the floor of your room.
  • You can plan to transition right before their birthday and make it big with words like ….you are a big girl, you are turning 2 years…
  • Once your baby settles in the new bed or room, avoid taking them back to your room.
  • Avoid initiating the transition if there are other changes happening in the family e.g moving house, toilet training, etc.
  • If you’re moving your child to make room in the crib for a new sibling, be sure the transition happens at least two months before you expect the new baby.
  • When your baby does sleep in the new bed or room without a fuss, give lots of positive encouragement and hugs.
