The probability of your toddler getting sick while at home or childcare is quite high as their immune system is still not strong enough to guard against viruses and bacteria. Fortunately, with proper care and treatment, the illnesses do not last long and they can resume their normal routine. Even so, parents in Kenya are still encouraged to know the common infections in toddlers so that they can notice symptoms early and take them to a paediatrician for diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
Although there are a wide variety of illnesses that parents often encounter when raising toddlers, here are some that are quite common and they include:

Common cold

As toddlers grow, they are likely to experience common colds that result in a blocked or runny nose. In some cases, it goes away after a few days but if persistent parents can be advised by a doctor to give medication to help relieve the blocked nose. However, if the cold develops into a cough and fever, it is advisable to see a doctor for further tests so that proper treatment can be administered.

Ear infection

Majority of ear infections are caused by viruses and usually last for a short duration before going away. Most times, vaccinations are given to children help them avoid such infections but some toddlers still face the illness as they grow. Some of the common symptoms of ear infections include regular tugging of the ear, pain in the ear, fussiness and having trouble sleeping. It is advisable to seek medical attention if you notice any of these symptoms with your toddler.

Skin infections

Due to direct contact with other children and adults, it is common to find toddlers having skin infections that may manifest in form of rashes or blisters. The skin rashes may vary in appearance and size making it important to seek medical advice on the best way to treat them.
