Finding out you are pregnant is an exciting time and you are likely to get a lot of advice on how to take care of yourself during this period. In most cases, you will be advised on the best foods to eat and the quantity as well. However, some of the information on diet for pregnant mums that are given by friends and family are actually myths carried on from one generation to another.
Popular myths surrounding diet for pregnant mums:

1. Myth: You are eating for two

Reality: Increase in food intake is not advisable because it leads to excessive weight gain which can result in diseases like gestational diabetes. Aim to eat nutritious meals served in appropriate portions.

2. Myth: You must increase meat intake for protein

Reality: Although meat is a major source of proteins you can also eat other vegetable alternatives such as beans, peas and other lentils that are also rich in the nutrient.

3. Myth: You need to take vitamin supplements in addition to your usual diet

Reality: If you are healthy before getting pregnant and maintain a nutritious diet through the pregnancy, you might not need supplements. However, supplements like folic acid recommended by your doctor should be taken as prescribed.

4. Myth: Your baby will be more intelligent if you eat fish

Reality: Fish is a great source of zinc, protein and iron which help in the development of your baby. However, there is no scientific evidence showing that it increases a baby’s intelligence.
