For parents, getting their toddler to stop hitting or biting may seem impossible especially when yelling “NO” is not working. It is important to remember that discipline for toddlers should always end up in teaching them right from wrong as they grow up. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to help them stop this habit over time:

• Identify the triggers
Most toddlers hit or bite for various reasons making it important to understand them better to stop the behaviour. The most common reasons include; the need for attention, curiosity, anger or imitation of another child’s behaviour. When parents are aware of the triggers of biting or hitting, they can intervene before they start acting out.

• Avoid yelling
Typically, many parents including those here in Kenya respond by yelling when their toddlers hit or bite. However, yelling rarely works and the behaviour is repeated over and over again resulting in frustration. The best alternative is to correct them by speaking respectfully while maintaining eye contact. In addition, mums should focus on explaining to them the behaviour they would like to see – than what they don’t – to help them understand the rules better.

• Reward positive behaviour
Toddlers thrive when rules on biting or hitting that are communicated clearly and enforced consistently. Ensure that you reward them when they stick to the rules so that they can pay attention to it and be eager to replicate it again.
