Getting toddlers to behave well is an uphill task for many parents in Kenya resulting in frustration and the use of ineffective discipline techniques. However, with the right information and patience, you can discipline your toddler in an appropriate manner and raise a responsible human being. Even so, it is important to be aware of discipline techniques that have been proven to work across the board and adjust them to work in your situation.
Some of the ways that have proven effective in teaching toddlers discipline include:
Using the word “NO”
When your toddler misbehaves, respond with a “No” using a firm tone so that you get their attention. You can follow this up with a short explanation on the reason for your refusal and direct them to another activity that they enjoy.
Deny them privileges
Toddlers have items that they love to hold or play with such as toys or a favourite stuffed animal. When they misbehave, you can take it away until they behave well and only give it back when they do the right thing. Remember to follow through so that they can connect their behaviour to the consequence.
Remove temptations
Your toddler is likely to do something wrong when everything around him is a “no-go” zone. Try and keep their play area free from items that may easily be destroyed or put in the mouth so that they can play without restraint and not get into trouble.
