Hair Care During Pregnancy

36

During pregnancy, the high oestrogen levels stimulate the growth of hair and the normal shedding of hair decreases and soon you will notice that you have thicker and more luxurious hair. As you enjoy this new look, it is important to care for the hair and to help prevent post-pregnancy hair loss.  Also note that that pregnancy, in itself, can naturally change the hair’s texture. Basic hair care involves a healthy lifestyle and proper care.  Here are a few tips on caring for your hair.

  • Wash oily hair daily and limit how much you touch your hair. For dry hair, keep the blow-drying time short and avoid over-styling, which can lead to dryness and breakage.
  • Consider waiting until the second trimester to do any chemical treatments on your hair.
  • Make sure the treatment is done in a well-ventilated area or salon.
  • Ensure that the chemicals are not on your hair for long by following the directions on the package.
  • Rinse your scalp thoroughly with water after treatment.
  • Do a patch test for allergic reactions before completing the process. Pregnancy may also cause your hair to react differently to perming or colouring. If this is the case, you may want to wait until after pregnancy to do such treatments on your hair.
  • Take a healthy balanced diet. Taking food rich in B-complex vitamins, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, iron, Omega 3 fatty acids and proteins is essential both during pregnancy and post-pregnancy since they play an essential role in maintaining healthy and strong hair.  B-Complex is found in whole grains, pulses, dairy products, eggs and chicken whereas Vitamin A is concentrated in yellow, orange and red-coloured vegetables and fruits. Watermelon, red meat, soya bean and rice flakes are rich sources of iron. Intake of Vitamin-C rich citrus fruits helps in better iron absorption. Proteins are the building blocks of hair. Eggs, dairy products, chicken and fish are sources of dietary protein as they promote a healthy scalp and aid better hair growth. A well-balanced diet is also one of the key measures to minimize excessive hair shedding post-pregnancy.
  • Use volumizing shampoo since they contain ingredients like protein that coat the hair, making the hair appear fuller.
  • Avoid using blow dryers and hot irons for hair drying and let your hair air dry instead.
  • Do not use hot water for hair washing.
  • Use natural oils especially for coarse hair e.g. olive oil, coconut oil etc.
  • You can also let your hair rest by doing loose braids or cornrows.  Ensure that you do not stay too long with them.
