For children, sharing is often a foreign term until it is taught and demonstrated by parents. Toddlers in Kenya are no different with many of them refusing to share their personal items with others whether at home or outdoors. The cause of this inability to share may vary from one child to another, but some are common across the board. Some of the reasons why toddlers have a hard time sharing are:
1. They are learning to own things
At the toddler stage, many children begin to see themselves as individuals and that they are different from others. It is for this reason that they start to be possessive and often use the words, “me” or “mine” when referring to items. However, this is considered natural by most experts and will likely disappear over time as they grow older and learn better.
2. They do not understand fairness
Toddlers do not understand that they cannot have everything to themselves and often make selfish decisions. It is possible to see them share once in a while but the majority of the time they will want to keep items in their possession even after being asked to share. If they have an older sibling, then sharing might be easier over time.
In general, the refusal to share by Kenyan toddlers can be eliminated by teaching them the importance to share through fun games and lessons. Be patient as they are likely to resist at first but with consistent encouragement, they will begin to share freely with other children and adults.
