Mealtimes for most mums that have toddlers in Kenya can be very frustrating especially if they are a fussy eater. Majority of toddlers, although difficult to feed will end up eating just enough to keep going. Fortunately, this phase often ends after a while meaning that mums must do their best to remain calm if they are to successfully feed their toddlers.

If your toddler is a fussy eater, it helps to have a plan in place to ensure that they eat healthily. Here are simple tips to make mealtime much easier to handle.

• Work with a schedule

Consistency when feeding your toddler is important if they are to eat well during mealtimes. Prepare a feeding routine that includes a minimum of three meals and two snacks that must be eaten at regular intervals. In case you have a house help, ensure that they stick to the routine so that the toddler knows the times set for meals.

• Discourage snacking before meals

Most times, when toddlers become fussy it is tempting to them a snack as a way of coaxing them to eat. However, this actually does the opposite, making it even harder for you to feed them a healthy meal. It is advisable to keep snacks a few hours before scheduled feeding time so that they are interested in the food offered during mealtime.

• Avoid overfeeding

Serve food in small portions so that your toddler does not feel overwhelmed leading to loss of appetite. Encourage them every time they eat well and do not force them to eat more than they can handle at mealtimes.
